Hollywood adventures so far.

29 Jun

Confession: I wore a cute outfit to work today but when I went outside on my balcony to take pictures, I was intimidated by the people next door and their children out on their balcony… So I scampered away and hid inside. Like I said, working up the courage to take pictures of yourself is, in my opinion, the biggest bloggers’ dilemma there is. So to make up for it I thought I’d take a break from our regularly scheduled outfit posting to tell you a little bit about some of the exploring I’ve been doing around L.A., such as restaurants and the like. Here are some of my favorite things so far:

Yoga West L.A. – A close friend of mine is very into Kundalini yoga, so I thought I’d give it a try. I determined I’m more of a vinyasa person for sure, but the 90 minute session which focused on breathing and inner meditation was very relaxing, and overall a much needed break from the real world.

Fish Grill – This all pescatarian (and glatt kosher) restaurant has several locations around L.A. and features all vegetarian and fish dishes. I got the fish tacos, which were amazing, and my friend got an ahi tuna steak, which was equally delicious! Also very affordable :)

The White Arrows – Through a friend of a friend, I ended up going to an album release party for these guys at The Troubador. They were great live performers, and their indie rock vibe is fun to dance to and refreshing. If you’re a fan of MGMT and Passion Pit, you’ll love them!

Rock of Ages – My grandlittle and I went on a sushi date to Shibuya in Calabasas and then to see Rock of Ages. It was a bit cheesy, but super fun and I’m a HUGE classic rock junkie so I loved every second of it. My only complaint was that I couldn’t get up and dance in the theater :)

Corner Bakery – Apparently they’re everywhere in California, but I’d never ever seen or been to one before last weekend and they have the best brunch! There are a ton of yummy and health-conscious options under $5. And over 100 things under 600 calories! (P.S. I just saw on the website they opened one of these 2 minutes away from my house in Austin in the Arboretum!!!!!! I won’t be home until November but I’m already beyond excited.)

Century City Farmer’s Market – Every Thursday by my office there’s a huge farmer’s market with everything you could imagine. I’ve been using the weekly opportunity to stock up on homemade hummus, pita, and tabouleh, as well as Rainier cherries and strawberries. The food stands there are also divine, and if you stop by you positively must get the Hawaiian chicken and rice that’s the hallmark food stall of the market!

Hiking in Solstice Canyon – Malibu. Waterfalls. Hiking Trails. Need I say more?

I can’t believe I’m only in L.A. for 7 more weeks. What else are must-do’s before I head back to Tucson? What are your favorite local discoveries here??

OOTD: Maxin’ out.

27 Jun

J. Crew outlet denim shirt (Madewell version), F21 Maxi from last season ( F21 similar), Kate Spade bangle, monogram necklace (similar), Marc Jacobs watch. Not pictured: Sam Edelman sandals.

I was having a bad hair day so I pulled it up, and then the sun was in my eyes when I was taking this picture so it looks like I’m angrily gritting my teeth. But aside from those things, it was an otherwise fabulous day! I took a lunch trip to Sephora where I went to town with my latest VIB coupon, and I downloaded instagram and foursquare last night so I’ve been hsving a ball with those. After work I met some school friends at an amazing foodie/local market restaurant called Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing in Venice. I gorged myself on avocado smoked trout, gourmet biscuits with honey butter and apricot preserves, quail with corncake, and an amazing pasta with lamb bolognese– not to mention the fabulous wine selection where I sampled a pinot grigio, rose, and gruner (which was new to me but delicious!)

How was your day?

OOTD: High-waisting time

26 Jun

Express cardigan (similar Banana Republic), Sugar Lips tank, BCBGeneration skirt (last season, but now they have a shorts version!), Kate Spade bangle, monogram necklace (similar), Marc Jacobs watch. Not pictured: Sam Edelman sandals.

Black on black on black… Well, more like black on black on crimson. Taking pictures of myself is still a work in progress, but I’m also learning to play with color correction and that’s going okay too :) I didn’t sleep much last night and thus was in a bit of an uncreative fashion rut when I got dressed for my internship this morning, but I think it turned out alright nonetheless! One thing I love about this outfit is the pretty cut out triangles on the bottom of the skirt. It’s the little things after all, right?

Learning to take pictures of yourself; the blogger’s dilemma. (and ootd!)

22 Jun

J. Crew blazer, BCBG button down tank, Express skinny jeans (similar), monogram necklace (similar), Marc Jacobs watch.

When I’m at school, I can usually scrounge up someone to take the occasional outfit photo for me– usually a begrudged roommate or mildly inconvenienced sorority sister. This summer I’ve sort of been in blogger no-man’s-land. I’m busy with a 40 hour + per week job, and I’m living independently in my own apartment, so there’s no one around to bother. Work is very professional, so it wouldn’t be appropriate to ask someone to snap a quick pic during my lunch break.

In December, I bought a cheap mini-tripod at Target on sale. For the last 6 months, it has remained in the plastic, untouched. I really wanted to take pictures of myself, but I was scared. I’d have to learn how to set it up. I’d have to figure out how to use the self-timer. Even more daunting, I’d have to convince myself that constructing this whole thing somewhere outside my apartment  wouldn’t make me look self-indulgent, idiotic, or otherwise utterly narcissistic.

It was only after I spent way too long analyzing this little gem that I realized my blogger laziness was not going to cut it.

Yes, that’s me taking a picture of myself in a [dirty] bathroom mirror. In heels. Standing on top of the bathtub. And yes, as all outfit bloggers know, there are 40 more equally similar/terrible photos in a folder on my desktop, where they will remain indefinitely. It’s truly embarrassing how long I spent looking through the series debating whether any could actually go on the internet. [Answer: HELL. TO. THE. NO!]

So today, I finally mustered up the courage to cut open the plastic and take out the tripod. Then, without the help of google or a manual, I messed with all of it. And I made mistakes. And then finally, I started to learn. And it was the best feeling! It’s still a work in progress, but practice makes perfect, and I can’t wait to show you all the fabulous (and budget) outfits I have been putting together for my internship.

Do you have any similar problems with outfit posts? How do you solve them? Do you ever feel weird taking pictures of yourself?

Getting Out of the Parking Garage (and other internship disasters)

13 Jun

I have officially been in Los Angeles for about 10 days now and everything at my internship is amazing! I’m learning so much about television development and getting the opportunity to read and watch a lot of great pilots (and some not so good…) While everything at my job is great, getting adjusted to adult life as a “working girl” has been far from easy. Aside from missing my friends and family and settling into a new apartment with a new roommate, I’ve had to get adjusted to my office building.

Yes, the building. Let me tell you what I mean. Last Monday, all interns were instructed to valet park our cars and we were given validation tickets for the day. On Tuesday morning, we were told to park in the enormous mall-sized garage underneath our building. After driving through various floors and color and number coordinated rows, I finally located a parking space near where I thought I worked. After going up several escalators, nothing in the lobby looked familiar and I realized I somehow had entered the wrong building. (Even after having spent about 20 minutes trying to enter my own building the day before when no one told me I had to proceed to security first to get a guest pass… and being stopped by every security guard in the hall.)

It took me about 20 minutes from there to figure out how to get to where my actual office was. Around lunch time, an HR person gave each of us our garage key cards to get in and out of the gate without paying. Well of course, when I left to go home, my key card didn’t work. I intercommed assistance and they told me that my card was invalid and the only way for me to exit would be to pay the $34 parking fee. After I was tired of being held captive, the nice machine declined my credit card. Eventually I was able to pay my ransom and escape.

The next morning I went to HR, had my fee reimbursed, and my key card reset. Guess what happened when I tried to leave for the day? Trapped again. I literally yelled at the intercom person that they could NOT make me pay the fee again and I think he let me leave just so he didn’t have to hear the sound of my voice anymore. On Thursday, my key card magically started working and has worked ever since :) It’s the small victories, isn’t it?

And I promise I haven’t been going naked to work. Actually, I’ve assembled some great outfits and I promise to figure out my tripod this weekend so you can see them soon! Oh, and remember my credit card that was declined? Well later that night (when it decided to work again) I accidentally left it at a gas station (where premium was $5.20 a gallon, mind you) and someone went on a nice little Bloomingdales/Macy’s spree with my Visa.

To make up for these things I’ve been doing an obsessive amount of baking which I also can’t wait to show you/tell you about soon! Stay tuned as I continue adjusting to life on my own in the big city.

First day internship outfit! *ootd

6 Jun

On Monday I started my summer internship at Lifetime television. It was such a fun day meeting the other interns, the people in my department, and getting a tour of everything. I am so lucky to have scored such a wonderful job with great people and a positive work environment. Here’s what I wore! (Sorry for the awk self-photos, none of my roommates were home and I haven’t quite figured out the tripod/self-timer I bought yet.)

I wore a BCBGeneration Flutter Sleeve Dress, gold monogram necklace, pearl studs, pearl ring (similar), Kate Spade bracelet, Marc Jacobs watch, and BCBGeneration shoes (similar).

At intern orientation I also got a huge giftbag full of company logo goodies! What do you think of this LA “business casual” look?

First Weekend in LA :)

5 Jun

Early Friday morning I finished packing up my things in Tucson and drove to L.A. (passing through 118 degree heat to get to 70 degrees. Yes really!) I spent the weekend unpacking and catching up with old friends. Here are some of the wonderful California things I got to experience this weekend :)

On Sunday my cousin Davi (who works for MTV) and I spent the day on the beach in Santa Monica.

Persian food is something I can’t get in Arizona or Texas; Javan is one of my favorite places to get my shiri polo with candied orange peel and almond saffron rice :)

I drove over 500 miles by myself in under 8 hours, pretty good time. I sang outloud to my ipod the entire way to stay awake haha.

My first parallel parking experience in L.A…. in one try!! (This was a big accomplishment for me guys, let’s just say I have parking issues.)

I started my internship at Lifetime today and got my own cubicle, computer, Outlook e-mail, and extension! So official.

My first day at Lifetime was today and it was positively wonderful! But more on that and an outfit post from my first day tomorrow :) How was your weekend? What are must do’s for my summer in LA? Toodles!
