Sorry for the radio silence this semester, I’ve been rehearsing non-stop for a play which opens tonight! Hours and hours of rehearsal are about to pay off as I perform this weekend in The Vagina Monologues! (P.S. I will laugh if you e-mail subscribers find this in your spam box because it contains the word “vagina.”) My mommy flew in from Texas to see me perform (oh, ya know, and sorority mom’s weekend) and I’m so excited to have her for the weekend :) In the meantime, here are a few photos from the Avicii concert that I went to with some sisters a few weeks ago! Warning: neon, sequins, and tutus ahead.
I had a fabulous NYE weekend and I hope you did too! I started the festivities Friday morning by driving up to Ft.Worth with my best friend (since kindergarten!) Cassie and her boyfriend Zach. We spent the afternoon hanging out and helping Cass organize her apartment, then went to Riscky’s barbeque downtown.
After filling up on ribs, we headed to Billy Bob’s famous honky tonk (the largest in Texas) to the sold-out Eli Young Band Concert. I first saw them a few years ago at Austin City Limits Music Festival, and they’ve only gotten better since! I tried to snap a few photos of the band but it was pretty dark and they didn’t come out too well unfortunately :( They played the song which first got me addicted to them, “Guinevere,” but I also loved the covers they did of “American Girl” and “Come Together.”
The next morning, we had a delicious brunch at Yogi’s in FW before heading back to Austin to get ready for NYE!
After a little r & r in the afternoon, my best girl friends and I (and super trooper bestie’s bf Zach) went out to a nice dinner and then to a hilarious comedy show downtown on 6th Street at Esther’s Follies.
After we counted down the new year downtown, we headed back to my house for a good old fashioned slumber party with baked brie, chocolate fondue, and a few celebratory libations. It was decidedly low-key which was absolutely perfect.
What did you do for new years? Are you an Eli Young Band fan? What are you looking forward to about 2012?
Well after a 5 day whirlwind trip home, I’m back at school… blogging, when I should be finishing my project and studying for my test that are both later this afternoon. Whoopsies. After a very unfortunate 2 year gap, returning to Austin City Limits Music Festival for the 10th anniversary did not disappoint. It was great to spend time with the fam, see several old friends from high school, and of course, eat my way through my favorite Austin restaurants. By far my favorite artists were Kanye West (awesome production value, complete with 20 ballerinas for the whole set,) Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, and best dance party was definitely Skrillex. Here’s a little breakdown of how the weekend went.
How was your weekend?? Continue reading
As I mentioned, I’m currently home in Austin, Texas, to celebrate my mom’s birthday and play around Zilker Park for Austin City Limits Musical Festival 2011!! In case you’re interested in broadening your musical horizons, here are some artists I’ll be seeing this weekend whom you might enjoy!
(PS, if you’re attending the festival this weekend, you absolutely must must MUST download the official ACL 2011 app for iphone and droid… it has maps, schedules, and even a group texting feature!!)
Technically that video is a remix of an artist I’ll be seeing (Skrillex) but the stop motion is absolutely incredible…
No official music video was released by Santogold (now Santigold due to an ongoing legal battle) for her best known track, but this is an unofficial, behind the scenes cut of it.
You might recognize this as the main soundtrack to the film Where The Wild Things Are, although I’ve been in love with the song since 2008, and even recently did a 3 minute performance art piece to this song for my Theatre 400 class!
This song is probably old news to most of you, but I heard Coldplay perform this (when it was new) last time they headlined at ACL, and it was phenomenal.
Here’s a great example of a band I discovered because of ACL, and I haven’t stopped loving them since.

Just for the weekend, that is. But it’s going to be a glorious weekend for multiple reasons. One- my amazing mother’s birthday is this week! I won’t tell how old she’s turning, but she still has it going on, obvi!
Reason number two why Austin is gonna be poppin’ this weekend: AUSTIN CITY LIMITS MUSIC FESTIVAL 2011!!!! (cue rowdy hippies and three jam packed days of awesome music, food, and art.) I was lucky enough to 3-day-pass it to ACL Fest in 2006, 2007, and 2008, but alas the festivals of 2009 and 2010 were made impossible due to the evil finagling of college professors who apparently want me to remain trapped in their classrooms to learn or something ridiculous like that… (jokes, obviously.) But this year I’m back with a vengeance and the lineup is not going to disappoint.
Among a few of the acts I’ll be catching are Kanye West, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Stevie Wonder, Alison Krauss, Nas and Damian Marley (sons of Bob), Cee Lo Green, Bright Eyes, Ray LaMontagne, Santigold (formerly known as Santogold), Pretty Lights, Skrillex, Iron & Wine, Foster the People, Cold War Kids, Chiddy Bang, Jack Ingram…. and about one hundred others! My favorite thing about ACL is the mix of people and genres around the festival grounds. There really is something for everyone and I always meet the most interesting Austinites and out-of-town visitors, and leave with a bunch of favorite new bands. Here are some photos from ACLs past:
I’ll be back later with some can’t-miss music vids, concert run-downs, and a guide to getting the most out of crazy, packed, dirty music festivals! Who are your favorite artists? What’s your favorite show you’ve ever been to? Anyone else going to be around ACL? Continue reading
So I already told you in my previous post how I’ll be exploring my love of fashion during SXSW, but here are some of the bands, films, and restaurants on my must-list while I’m home exploring Austin for the week!

After several days worth of much needed antibiotics, I’m feeling as good as new! As soon as I tackle the large stack of homework in front of me I can’t wait to get back to this blog… I’ve thought of some great things to write about over the next few weeks. To celebrate my feeling better, my boyfriend, many other friends and sorority sisters, and I sojourned downtown to go to a Steve Aoki concert. For those of you unfamiliar, he is an electronic/house d.j./remix artist and also owns his own record label. I had never been to a concert like this before (my boyfriend is the real afficianado…) and boy was it crazy. I think I danced for about 5 hours straight at least. I’ve spent the entire day recuperating and am laying in bed watching Oprah’s Favorite Things episode in order to regain my energy for a fun girl’s night out.

Do you ever hear a song on the radio and it’s so catchy that it gets stuck in your head for days on end? Well this past week my boyfriend introduced me to Cee-Lo’s new single, “F– You,” and I haven’t stopped humming it since. Despite the somewhat offensive title, the song is surprisingly upbeat with a strong bubblegum feel. The beat is reminiscent of 60s pop music like The Temptations and The Supremes, and the song is so fun I can’t help but dance like a dork and sing along. I love the soul-style vocal chorus and catchy pipe organ. The video is modeled after a 50s soda pop diner and the colors are beautiful. Check out the music video above.
This style really reminds me of Amy Winehouse and Duffy. If you like this modern “Big Band” sound, I also suggest you check out Nikki & Rich. Ever since I heard them on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno a few months ago, I’ve been slightly obsessed with their new single, “Cat and Mouse.” Here’s the official lyric video: Continue reading
