Words of Wisdom from Saint Augustine

3 Jun

Note: This post was written two weeks ago and scheduled to post today. As you read this, I’m currently at the end of my two week school trip to Israel, and getting ready to go visit family in France. Please leave some comment love and let me know you stopped by… although unfortunately I won’t be able to catch up on your blogs or respond until I return to the United States. Wish me luck, I can’t wait to share my adventures with you!

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” ~Saint Augustine

Nope, he’s not just a type of lawn grass, he’s also a historical figure. I really like this quote, and speaking of reading, here’s what I’m toting along on my travels:

Steinbeck's East of Eden

What type of books do you like to read on vacation? Have you read East of Eden? What did you think?

“We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend.”

~Robert Louis Stevenson

I thought this one was especially fitting and wonderful as I travel through Israel with my boyfriend, 2 of my roommates, several sorority sisters, and other classmates. Let me know what you’re up to this week!

I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within.  ~Lillian Smith

Tx SCC Part 2: Monetizing Your Blog

28 Mar

Morning Update: My roommates tell me I’m apparently obligated to tell you all that it’s my birthday. So… I’m turning 20 today. YIKES! I’ve been a teenager for exactly half my life and this change is freakin’ me out… I’M SO OLD! I celebrated with a very nice dinner with close friends last night and I’m celebrating today by going to class from 9:00am-6:30pm and going to rehearsal from 6:30pm-9:00pm. Exciting, no? Hope you all have a marvelous day!

This is my second in a series of several posts about the amazing eye-opening things I learned about blogging at the Texas Style Council Conference in Austin over spring break. The first panel following Jennine Jacob’s keynote address was titled Going Pro, and discussed in detail the ins and outs of monetizing your blog and seeking sponsorships, affiliates, and advertisers. The panel featured Alessandra from Lulu*s, Elisa from BlogHer, Grechen from Grechen’s Closet, Patty from Charming Charlie, and was moderated by Jen from Jen Loves Kev.

I want to preface the lessons I learned by pointing out that clearly I’m not an expert on this subject. I don’t have any sponsors, affiliates, or advertisers, (yet), and have never tried to seek them out. However, that will probably change in the future and after hearing this panel I feel very prepared to make this transition and ready to navigate the wide world of monetization when I feel my blog is ready. So, without further adieu, here are the important lessons I learned about “going pro.” Continue reading

What I learned from Jennine Jacob: Just Keep Blogging

21 Mar

My best friend (and fashion merchandising major) Cassie and me at the Conference between sessions.

WOW. That’s about all I have to say about the fantastic panels and amazing speakers I heard this past weekend at the first annual Texas Style Council Conference. In fact, I learned so darn much during each session that I’ll be devoting each its own post and spreading them out over several weeks, so as not to overwhelm you with blog-obsessive goodness.

The keynote address was delivered by Jennine Jacob, blogger behind The Coveted and Founder of Independent Fashion Bloggers. She had great beads of wisdom to share and has helped me re-evaluate my philosophy as a blogger.

Words of Wisdom From…

19 Feb

“Any man can be a father, but it takes a special man to be a dad.” -Unknown.

Me and my dad before my Senior Prom, May 2009

My dad is in town visiting for 4 days for my sorority’s father’s weekend and we are out exploring Tucson, thus the lack of posting recently. But I can’t wait to sit down for a few minutes and show you some pictures and tell you all about our adventures very soon!

Words of Inspiration from Elizabeth Taylor

5 Nov

Well, I’ve officially dropped the ball on the blog. I’ve been trying to post every 3 days, but yesterday, I failed. Life is just busy- school is going about a bajillion miles a minute and I feel like I’m barely catching my breath. I really am in total awe of these bloggers with perfect dainty lives who never ever burn gourmet cookies, which always seem to have more ingredients and steps than the 5-floor trek to my creative writing class. I can’t even make an edible batch of those break-n-bake ones. Oy.

Anyway, excuses aside, I’m going to try as hard as possible to keep up with this thing. It’s only been two months, after all. So, here’s something short but sweet to tide you over for the weekend. I promise I’ll be back next week with something more substitive. I hope you all have a lovely and relaxing few days of rest- I know I’m looking forward to it!

“I fell off my pink cloud with a thud” – Elizabeth Taylor

I love this quote because it reminds me that everything can’t always go the way you want it to. As much as I wish everything in life would be perfect and completely hunky-dory, things don’t always go as planned. But, we learn from our mistakes, grow, and work our way back up to that pink cloud. I guess it’s time to start climbing!

P.S. Beauty-wise, I’m loving her thick but glamorous eyebrows in this photo.

Lessons from the Disney Vault

28 Oct

School has really been kicking my butt lately. I’m not behind yet, but if I keep procrastinating the stack of homework in front of me I will certainly regret it tomorrow. Clearly what this situation calls for is a little blogging break to get my creative and productive energies flowing, right? I feel stressed, swamped, and generally overwhelmed at the amount of work before me. In times like these, I like to remember the little lessons I learned as a child, which happen to be mainly from old Disney movies. This was a time before Disney’s claim to fame was Miley Cyrus and the High School Musical franchise.

Words of Inspiration from Diane von Furstenberg

22 Oct

“Be authentic and know who you are, regardless of what you’re wearing.” – Diane von Furstenberg

The legendary designer is interviewed about her personal style in the October issue of InStyle magazine. I love this quote because I’m always so hesitant to try out trends that I’m not sure mesh well with my personality. Taking risks in fashion is strongly encouraged, but you’ll never feel confident unless you stay true to yourself.

Bisous,

Rachel
