Austin City Limits Music Festival 2011

20 Sep

The gates of heaven.

Well after a 5 day whirlwind trip home, I’m back at school… blogging, when I should be finishing my project and studying for my test that are both later this afternoon. Whoopsies. After a very unfortunate 2 year gap, returning to Austin City Limits Music Festival for the 10th anniversary did not disappoint. It was great to spend time with the fam, see several old friends from high school, and of course, eat my way through my favorite Austin restaurants. By far my favorite artists were Kanye West (awesome production value, complete with 20 ballerinas for the whole set,) Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, and best dance party was definitely Skrillex. Here’s a little breakdown of how the weekend went.

Dressed for the fest. On day 1 we caught James Blake, Ray La Montagne, Cold War Kids (got to hear them play my fave song!), Nas and Damian Marley, Santigold, Pretty Lights, and KANYE WEST

High school friends reunited :)

Kanye West rising from the center of the crowd to take the stage. He performed 3 acts with a "fallen angel" theme that featured 20 ballerinas intensely dancing for almost 2 hours.

Second day was marked by pouring rain. But we still had a blast at Skrillex, Iron & Wine and Allison Krauss weren't fantastic, neither was Cee Lo (although he did a Pussycat Dolls cover...weird...), TV on the Radio rocked, and Stevie Wonder was a fun classic that I'm glad I went to although the sound mixer seriously needed to be fired.

Day 3 was a more relaxed chill day. Hearing Jack Ingram sing the National Anthemn was awesome, Fleet Foxes were great, we heard a bit of Empire of the Sun from afar, and ended the fest strong with Arcade Fire, who had a brilliant media show backing their set.

As I mentioned, I’m currently home in Austin, Texas, to celebrate my mom’s birthday and play around Zilker Park for Austin City Limits Musical Festival 2011!! In case you’re interested in broadening your musical horizons, here are some artists I’ll be seeing this weekend whom you might enjoy!

(PS, if you’re attending the festival this weekend, you absolutely must must MUST download the official ACL 2011 app for iphone and droid… it has maps, schedules, and even a group texting feature!!)

Technically that video is a remix of an artist I’ll be seeing (Skrillex) but the stop  motion is absolutely incredible…

No official music video was released by Santogold (now Santigold due to an ongoing legal battle) for her best known track, but this is an unofficial, behind the scenes cut of it.

You might recognize this as the main soundtrack to the film Where The Wild Things Are, although I’ve been in love with the song since 2008, and even recently did a 3 minute performance art piece to this song for my Theatre 400 class!

This song is probably old news to most of you, but I heard Coldplay perform this (when it was new) last time they headlined at ACL, and it was phenomenal.

Here’s a great example of a band I discovered because of ACL, and I haven’t stopped loving them since.

What music videos brighten your day? Favorite songs? Isn’t it amazing how music can quickly change your mood? Share your best discoveries! Continue reading

Tell the world I’m coming home

14 Sep

Just for the weekend, that is. But it’s going to be a glorious weekend for multiple reasons. One- my amazing mother’s birthday is this week! I won’t tell how old she’s turning, but she still has it going on, obvi!

Mommy Pam and me before senior prom, 2009

Reason number two why Austin is gonna be poppin’ this weekend: AUSTIN CITY LIMITS MUSIC FESTIVAL 2011!!!! (cue rowdy hippies and three jam packed days of awesome music, food, and art.) I was lucky enough to 3-day-pass it to ACL Fest in 2006, 2007, and 2008, but alas the festivals of 2009 and 2010 were made impossible due to the evil finagling of college professors who apparently want me to remain trapped in their classrooms to learn  or something ridiculous like that… (jokes, obviously.) But this year I’m back with a vengeance and the lineup is not going to disappoint.

Among a few of the acts I’ll be catching are Kanye West, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Stevie Wonder, Alison Krauss, Nas and Damian Marley (sons of Bob), Cee Lo Green, Bright Eyes, Ray LaMontagne, Santigold (formerly known as Santogold), Pretty Lights, Skrillex, Iron & Wine, Foster the People, Cold War Kids, Chiddy Bang, Jack Ingram…. and about one hundred others! My favorite thing about ACL is the mix of people and genres around the festival grounds. There really is something for everyone and I always meet the most interesting Austinites and out-of-town visitors, and leave with a bunch of favorite new bands. Here are some photos from ACLs past:

Sunset over Zilker Park

Masses of people and sardonic flags, so you can find your peeps... cell service is questionable at the park

Me and my best friend Cassie enjoying a show and being goofy

The Flaming Lips.... being the flaming lips.

Stage climbing is highly encouraged for everyone from The Raconteurs to Matisyahu

I’ll be back later with some can’t-miss music vids, concert run-downs, and a guide to getting the most out of crazy, packed, dirty music festivals! Who are your favorite artists? What’s your favorite show you’ve ever been to? Anyone else going to be around ACL? Continue reading
