TxSC: The Poshmark Sponsor Party + Sparkly Dress

19 Mar

Saturday night at the Texas Style Council Conference is always one of the highlights. They hosted a fabulous party full of pop-up shops and great giveaways by several of the conference sponsors. I just wanted to take this opportunity to say what an absolutely wonderful time I had, and also to highlight a few of the great companies I learned about at the party that I was particularly drawn to!

Laura, Cassie, and I at the Sponsor Party. I wore a silver dress from Luxe Apothetique and a gold Cynthia Rowley tote to carry around all my awesome goodies :)

Upon walking in to the party, we bloggers were each treated to a pair of Dr.Scholl’s Fast Flats, a really comfy pair of ballet-flat like slippers to give our feet some relief from our sky-high heels. They were super comfy and made walking back to the car much more bearable! We were also gifted a beautiful Stella and Dot bracelet from Whitney Fields. I have purchased from her before and she is a great Stylist to work with! She is adorable and sweet, and I strongly recommend going through her if you plan to purchase anything from Stella and Dot.

INPINK also graciously provided me with giftcards totaling $100 to spend on any of the amazing jewelry on their website. I haven’t quite finished spending it yet, but when I do I will be sure to let you know what I picked out! Another jewelry designer I was enamored by was Manic Trout. I love how she mixes vintage and modern to create really unique pieces. I absolutely adore this necklace made out of Amazonite and a metal seahorse ($85). And of course also this bracelet featuring a stegosaurus, $50 (although it’s a toss up whether I would prefer that one to the brontosaurus!)

Lastly, I really liked the mission behind Radiant Cosmetics. This makeup company was founded to help victims of human trafficking and support charities that combat the illegal sex industry. At a minimum, at least 20% of their profits are donated to these causes. They had some great lip glosses and my best friend loved their mascara, so make sure to check them out!

There were tons of other awesome sponsors at the party, including Lulu*s, ModCloth, Land’s End Canvas, Francesca’s Collections, and Electric Frenchie just to name a few. Unfortunately I just can’t individually highlight them all, but I want to thank each and every one of them for helping make the Texas Style Council Conference weekend a huge success! You can check out that website to see who else was there too :)

Lulu*s and Swap.com Party (TxSC Night 1) (OOTD!)

12 Mar

I kicked off spring break with a long day of travel to Austin followed by a night of fun at the first event for the Texas Style Council Conference, a swap party co-hosted by Lulu*s and Swap.com. It was a blast! Attendees were asked to bring 2 items of clothing to swap, and I traded a pair of denim shorts from Madewell and a vintage cocktail dress for a sheer leopard print button down and a neat red colorblock skirt that’s a bit mod. In addition, Lulu*s was showing off a bunch of their current pieces and I found more than a few to crush on.

My best friend Cassie and I at the party!

Laura, Cassie, and I mingling at the party

I wore a Diane von Furstenberg leather jacket (similar), J.Crew denim button down (similar), American Apparel leggings, vintage boots, Cynthia Rowley tote (similar), and red pashmina :)

Among my favorite items on display from Lulu*s were:

Edwardian Ball Lace Black Dress, $40

Obey graffiti rose tank, $33

Sashay Away Royal Blue Peplum Dress, $33

It was the perfect kickoff to a wonderful weekend, more on the fabulous sponsor’s party, mentor brunch, and of course, the panels- coming later this week :) What did you do this weekend?

Tx SCC Part 3: Using Your Blog to Start a Career

4 Apr

This is the third in a series of several posts about the amazing eye-opening things I learned about blogging at the Texas Style Council Conference in Austin over spring break. Click to check out part one and part two.

The second panel of the day was titled Careers: Using your site to sell your goods or launch a new career. The scheduled panelists were Brooke from Fashism, Janette from Store Envy, Pamela from Market Publique, Kendra from DBA, and Nora from Burdastyle. The panel was moderated by Pam from Swap.com. There was a special “celeb” last-minute addition to the panel- Kelly from famous blog The Glamourai made an impromptu appearance.

Although I’m not currently looking to start a business through my blog, their advice truly expands above just that and gave me lots of insight into how I can blog beyond myself, in order to help other people and my community as a whole. I can’t wait to implement some of their thoughts so I can reach out and impact others through my writing. Here are some of the pearls of wisdom I learned from these amazing women. Continue reading

Tx SCC Part 2: Monetizing Your Blog

28 Mar

Morning Update: My roommates tell me I’m apparently obligated to tell you all that it’s my birthday. So… I’m turning 20 today. YIKES! I’ve been a teenager for exactly half my life and this change is freakin’ me out… I’M SO OLD! I celebrated with a very nice dinner with close friends last night and I’m celebrating today by going to class from 9:00am-6:30pm and going to rehearsal from 6:30pm-9:00pm. Exciting, no? Hope you all have a marvelous day!

This is my second in a series of several posts about the amazing eye-opening things I learned about blogging at the Texas Style Council Conference in Austin over spring break. The first panel following Jennine Jacob’s keynote address was titled Going Pro, and discussed in detail the ins and outs of monetizing your blog and seeking sponsorships, affiliates, and advertisers. The panel featured Alessandra from Lulu*s, Elisa from BlogHer, Grechen from Grechen’s Closet, Patty from Charming Charlie, and was moderated by Jen from Jen Loves Kev.

I want to preface the lessons I learned by pointing out that clearly I’m not an expert on this subject. I don’t have any sponsors, affiliates, or advertisers, (yet), and have never tried to seek them out. However, that will probably change in the future and after hearing this panel I feel very prepared to make this transition and ready to navigate the wide world of monetization when I feel my blog is ready. So, without further adieu, here are the important lessons I learned about “going pro.” Continue reading

Tx SCC Day 2: The One-Shoulder Maxi Dress

23 Mar

Before I get into to more blogging business posts, I wanted to show you what I wore for the fun event! Dressing for a blogging conference is tricky. I wanted to be cute, comfortable, admired by other people with strong opinions about the fashion industry, and to top it all off, be genuine to my personal style. I think I made a great choice for all of these demands by selecting a one-shoulder raspberry printed maxi-dress from Forever 21. Here’s how it turned out:

What I learned from Jennine Jacob: Just Keep Blogging

21 Mar

My best friend (and fashion merchandising major) Cassie and me at the Conference between sessions.

WOW. That’s about all I have to say about the fantastic panels and amazing speakers I heard this past weekend at the first annual Texas Style Council Conference. In fact, I learned so darn much during each session that I’ll be devoting each its own post and spreading them out over several weeks, so as not to overwhelm you with blog-obsessive goodness.

The keynote address was delivered by Jennine Jacob, blogger behind The Coveted and Founder of Independent Fashion Bloggers. She had great beads of wisdom to share and has helped me re-evaluate my philosophy as a blogger.

Texas Style Council Conference: Mixer Recap

16 Mar

The first Texas Style Council Conference event I was able to attend was their dance party/mixer at BoConcept in the upscale and trendy 2nd Street District. As soon as my favorite wing woman best friend since kindergarten, Cassie, and I walked in to the beautiful design gallery, we were greeted by sponsors and vendors offering us discounts, raffles, blog opportunities, and some great swag. Our first stop was the Lulu*s table, where we each spun a wheel in hopes of winning a prize. I was out of luck, but Cassie scored a free piece of jewelry and selected a neat gold snake ring. Our next stop was an adorable photo booth by Nathan Russell Photography, complete with silly props. We took some hilarious photos and had so much fun!

Our next stop was the Dismount Creative area where we made a leather business card holder ourselves, it was so easy and only took about 10 minutes! Continue reading

Two Fashion Conferences in One Week?!

3 Mar

I’m almost done with the awful thing which is midterms, and I’ve already come down with spring fever. The weather is warm, the bikinis are at the ready, and in just 9 days I’ll be on my way home to Austin for spring break! Not only am I excited to spend time with my parents and old friends and eat and shop at old favorites, but I’ll get to experience South by Southwest Music and Film Festival, The Texas Style Council Conference, and Style X. What are all those things? Well read on to find out!

The Texas Style Council Conference is the first blogging conference put on by the Texas Style Council. Though not officially part of South by Southwest Music and Film Festival, they happen at the same time so there will be tons going on. Here’s the low down:

Friday March 11/7pm-10pm/Clothing Swap
Basically, bring all your cute clothes you want to trade and swap for something new to you to incorporate into your wardrobe! Unfortunately I’ll just be landing as this event is taking place… which is especially sad since I just cleaned out my closet and have tons to trade. Oh well, I’ll have to live vicariously through one of you.

Saturday March 12/Scavenger Hunt/Boutique Crawl/Dance Party
In the morning the first 75 people to arrive will get to form teams for a super fun photo scavenger hunt through the 2nd street shopping district. Prizes are provided by local boutiques. How unique and what a great way to explore and spot some fun fashion finds. Later that night, the organizers are throwing a crazy dance party with some fabulous sponsors and pop-up shops making an appearance. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m excited about the blogging aspect of this conference… but is it weird that I might be most excited about this dance party?

Sunday March 13/Brunch/Symposium/Fashion Show
After beginning the day with a little brunch, I will get to hear keynote speakers address the business of blogging and the future of weblogs and their role in fashion and style trends. For a complete list of speakers please visit the website. Later that night there will be a fashion show to end the weekend on. I absolutely can’t wait!

For the total rundown, schedule, panelists, attendees, and anything else you might possibly want to know, check out the TxSCC here. Continue reading
